Step onto our glass-backed squash courts and discover one of sport’s most dynamic games. Whether you’re completely new to racquet sports or looking to reignite an old passion, squash at Malvern Active offers you the perfect blend of intense cardio, strategic thinking, and pure fun.

What is Squash?

Fast-paced action meets strategic thinking

Squash is the ultimate test of agility, endurance, and tactical thinking all in one thrilling sport. Played in an enclosed court with four walls in play, you’ll use every inch of space as you battle for control of the small rubber ball.

What makes squash addictive is how it challenges every part of you. Your legs power you around the court, your mind races to anticipate your opponent’s next move, and your reflexes sharpen with every rally. It’s chess at lightning speed.

The beauty lies in how quickly the game evolves. One moment you’re defending in the back corner, the next you’re launching a winning attack.

How To Play Squash: A Beginners Guide - Equipment, Rules and Tactics

Frequently Asked Questions about squash

I've never played squash – is it too intense for beginners?

Not at all! While squash can be incredibly dynamic, you absolutely control the pace of your learning. Start with gentle rallies, focus on getting comfortable with the ball and court, and gradually build up intensity as your confidence grows. Our community is wonderfully supportive of newcomers.

What equipment do I need?

Just bring yourself in comfortable athletic wear and we'll sort out everything else. Racquets and balls can be hired from our reception, so you can discover if squash is for you without any upfront investment. Non-marking court shoes are essential - if you're not sure about your trainers, our reception team can advise.

How fit do I need to be to start?

Whatever your fitness levels, you can certainly enjoy squash. Yes, it's an excellent workout, but you can absolutely start at your own pace and build up gradually. Many of our members discovered squash as their path back to fitness and love how quickly they noticed improvements in their stamina and strength.

Can I play if I'm older or have joint concerns?

Many of our members across all age ranges enjoy squash regularly. The key is listening to your body and playing at a pace that feels right for you. The sport's adaptability means you can have brilliant games focusing on placement and tactics rather than pure athleticism. As always, check with your GP or physiotherapist if you have specific concerns.

What if I don't have anyone to play with?

If you don't have a squash partner to start against then join our leagues or tournaments, and you'll quickly connect with players at similar levels. Many of our strongest squash friendships started with someone brave enough to put their name down for a competition.

Are the leagues really suitable for all levels?

Absolutely! We organise our leagues to ensure fair, enjoyable matches for everyone. Whether you're just finding your feet or you've been playing for years, you'll find yourself in games that challenge and inspire you without being overwhelming.
